Newfoundland balladeer Matthew Byrne takes Hearts & Heroes West
February 1-17, 2015
St. John’s, NL– This February, traditional singer Matthew Byrne is bringing his stunning new album, Hearts & Heroes, across Western Canada for a string of exclusive solo performances. Byrne, recently labeled “one of the finest interpreters of traditional song in this country” by Penguin Eggs Magazine, is eager to bring this ‘new’ collection of old songs to folk and trad audiences across Canada.
“I’m heading West next month for a run of shows that I’m really excited for,” says Byrne. “I have a new album this time and I can’t wait to play these songs and tell their stories, and make some new friends along the way.”
Following a family legacy of Newfoundland music makers, Byrne is strongly influenced by his unique musical lineage. He knows the tapestry of traditional songs equally weaves a great story with a beautiful melody. Stripped down, his live show offers powerful honesty, polished guitar work, masterful storytelling, and a voice that transports time, place, and oceans.
Known to many as singer and bouzouki player with The Dardanelles, Byrne has quickly earned his place as one of the East Coast’s most authentic and vital traditional voices. He has toured nationally and internationally throughout the US, UK, and Australia.
With songs that possess old world grace yet still sound fresh and new, Hearts & Heroes showcases Byrne at his finest. Produced by Billy Sutton in St. John’s, NL, this album combines traditional songs from Byrne’s family singing tradition with those he has sussed out himself from singers abroad. It is an album that translates seamlessly to the live stage, and is an artfully crafted follow-up to his debut album Ballads, released in 2010.
